What We Do
Support Innovative Projects in the Classroom
Since 1991, the Andover Fund for Education (AFE) has provided grants to Andover teachers to support innovative projects that enrich the curriculum, inspire students and staff, and expand the community’s involvement in public education.
Recent AFE grants have allowed students to build sophisticated science projects, create books through “image making,” know the joy of being published in newly created literary magazines, discover new cultures through the travels of a globe-trotting bear, put foreign language skills into action as bilingual tutors, experience the Industrial Revolution through interdisciplinary activities, apply the principles of physics by designing and building marshmallow-loaded catapults and gravity-defying rockets, and learn about soil cycles by creating and analyzing composting areas.
Many effective teaching ideas in use in the Andover schools today got their start as pilot projects funded by AFE. In fact, more than 15,000 students, and every public school in Andover, have benefited from projects supported by AFE.
Expand Community Involvement in the Public Schools
AFE works to initiate and expand community involvement in the public schools through a variety of events, including the Annual Andover Spelling Bee, which invariably draws a large and enthusiastic crowd. The Spelling Bee brings together students, parents, teachers, administrators, local government officials, and a variety of community organizations for an evening of entertainment and friendly competition. All proceeds are used to fund future AFE grants.
Grow AFE's Endowment Fund
In order to sustain and expand its efforts on behalf of the public schools, AFE works to grow its endowment fund by inviting contributions from individuals, organizations and corporations.
